Types of dental emergency and how to deal with them:

Dental

EMERGENCY

Avulsed tooth

Avulsed tooth (tooth knocked out)

If a tooth has been knocked out of the mouth, it is crucial to seek dental attention promptly. When a tooth is dislodged, there can be damage to tissues, nerves, and blood vessels. If the tooth can be reinserted into its socket within an hour, there is a possibility that the tissues will regenerate and support the tooth once again.

Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Contact our dental office immediately.
  2. Handle the tooth by its crown and rinse it with warm water. Avoid touching the root.
  3. If feasible, try to place the tooth back into its socket. If not possible, tuck it gently into the cheek pouch.
  4. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, place it in a cup of milk, saliva, or water as a last resort. It is vital to prevent the tooth from drying out.
  5. Make your way to our office promptly and safely.

We will attempt to reposition the tooth in its natural socket. In some cases, the tooth may reattach, but if the inner workings of the tooth are severely damaged, root canal therapy might be necessary.

Dental filling or Crown

Lost filling or crown

Typically, a dental restoration such as a crown or filling may become dislodged while consuming food. Once dislodged, the affected tooth can become extremely sensitive to temperature changes and pressure. The underlying cause of loose crowns is often tooth decay, which alters the tooth’s shape, making the crown ill-fitting.

If you experience a crown coming out, it is essential to schedule a dental appointment promptly. Store the crown in a cool and safe place, as there may be a possibility of reinserting it. Leaving the crown out for an extended period could lead to tooth shifting or further damage.

If immediate dental care is not accessible, follow these steps:

  1. Apply clove oil to the affected tooth to alleviate pain.
  2. Clean the crown and affix it back onto the tooth using dental cement, which can be obtained from a local pharmacy.
  3. In case the crown is lost, apply dental cement to the top of the tooth to ease discomfort.
  4. DO NOT use any type of glue to reattach the crown.

Once you visit the dentist, they will assess the crown to determine if it still fits properly. If it does, they will reattach it to the tooth. In cases of decay, appropriate treatment will be provided, and if necessary, a new crown will be fabricated.

Teeth Restoration

Cracked or broken teeth

The teeth are resilient, but they can still be vulnerable to various issues like fractures, cracks, and breaks. Occasionally, fractures might not cause much discomfort, but if they extend into the root, the pain can become severe. These problems can arise due to different factors such as accidents, grinding, or excessive biting. If you experience a fractured or cracked tooth, it is crucial to seek an appointment with a dental professional as soon as possible.

In the event of a broken-off segment of a tooth, you can take the following steps at home:

  1. Contact our dental office for assistance.
  2. Gently rinse the tooth fragment and your mouth with lukewarm water.
  3. If there’s any bleeding, apply gauze to the area for around ten minutes.
  4. To reduce swelling and pain, place a cold, damp dishtowel on your cheek.
  5. If you can’t immediately see us, you can cover the affected area with over-the-counter dental cement.
  6. Consider using a topical pain reliever.

The extent of the break or fracture will determine the treatment options available. If the fracture extends into the root, root canal therapy is often the most effective way to save the tooth. In the case of a complete break, your dentist will typically reattach the fragment to the tooth temporarily.

Dislodged & Loose Teeth

Dislodged/loose teeth

When a tooth becomes dislodged or loosened from its socket due to various factors like trauma or decay, there’s a possibility of saving it. If the tooth remains in place, connected to the blood vessels and nerves, it may not immediately necessitate root canal therapy.

For urgent attention, kindly get in touch with our office to schedule an appointment promptly. Meanwhile, you can apply a cold compress and use over-the-counter medications to alleviate any discomfort. Upon examination, your dentist will carefully reposition the tooth and utilize splints to provide stability. If the tooth’s condition does not improve, root canal therapy might become a consideration.
